| 11:52 am | How A Bump Key Works How a Bump Key Works A bump key works with the aid of gravity and the force of a vacuum. The pins used in a standard lock must be lifted above the release line to allow them to fall into the gaps of the key. The pins are different lengths which is why an original key works with its different gap depths. It is a key with uniform gaps and uniform depths all the way to the first ridge line. The key is inserted into the lock and then removed one notch. Sharply hit the key the rest of the way into the lock. This will cause a vacuum to lift the pins in a domino effect and they will drop into the gaps of the key. A slight turning pressure will release the lock and allow it to be unlocked. A high security lock uses a different system; therefore the bump key technique will not work. This technique is good to know if you have problems with your keys such as losing them or if you’re locked out of your home.
